1). Think About Why You Want To Quit:

You will be able to quit smoking only if you are determined, and this determination will take birth if you think about how you are harming yourself or others by this habit.

Think about how passive smoking can harm your family and those around you, and how sad your children are when they see you smoke.

Imagine how many diseases you are inviting, including heart attack, stroke, chronic lung disease, cataracts, and of course, cancer.

Now, also think if you stop smoking, how things can improve. You will look better, your teeth will not look yellow, you will not smell nicotine all the time, you will save money, have more energy, and be healthy.

2). Prepare A Plan:

Giving up on smoking all together might not be easy, mainly if you are a chain smoker. This is one of the mistakes that make most people fail.

They think they will give up smoking, and the next morning everything will have changed. But, this is not how things work. So, you should instead make a plan and work accordingly.

If, for instance, you smoke the entire pack or ten cigarettes in a day, reduce that to 7, then 4, then 3, 1, and eventually stop smoking.

3). Involve Your Family And Friends:

To quit smoking might not be easy for everyone, and this is why you need support from one and all. Let your family and friends know about your decision, and ask for their help.

The more support you have, the easier will things be for you. Ask your dear ones to keep you distracted by playing games, going out, taking walks, watching movies together.

Also, request them to bear with you if you get irritable or cranky, as these are symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. If any of your friends smoke, either you can help them quit smoking or at least request them not to smoke around you.

4). Identify Your Triggers And Plan A Solution:

You perhaps are tempted to smoke during some particular times, which has become a habit. If you are aware of such situations that may trigger cravings, you can plan a distraction ahead of time.

For instance, you may have the habit of smoking while drinking, driving, after evening tea, after dinner, or maybe when you are lonely, depressed, or stressed.

Plan some healthy distractions to combat such potential triggers. If you smoke after dinner, you can talk to your friend, or maybe go out for a walk. If you have a habit of smoking while driving, keep a pack of gum with you to chew it instead.

5). Be Ready To Tackle Cravings:

It is quite natural for you to experience nicotine cravings when your body is going through the withdrawal process. However, do no be disappointed or afraid, as desires are not endless; they last generally for about 5 to 10 minutes, and no longer.

When cravings strike, all you need to do is drive your attention elsewhere. You can drink a glass of water, chew gum, take deep breaths, play with your pet dog or cat, eat your favorite chocolate, or go through the list of reasons why you have decided to quit smoking. It will prevent you from touching your pack of cigarettes again.

6). Opt For Hypnotherapy:

In this method, the patient is generally asked to imagine the horrid outcomes of smoking. Your hypnotherapist will likely ask you to think that the smoke of cigarettes smells so awful, quite like the exhaust of trucks.

The hypnotherapy session uses autosuggestion methods, which help smokers build their willpower, which allows them to give up smoking.

7). Understand That You Will Live Longer:

You must be aware of the fact that smokers cut their lives shorter by about 15 long years. If you are someone who loves life, plans to make it big in life, or wants to see your children grow up and living their dreams, then you have to give up smoking.

It will help you live a healthier, longer, and happier life with and for your dear ones. You may even join some support group, be a part of group therapy sessions, and even share your experience with others.

Not only will you get support from others, but you will also be a support for those who might be having a difficult time giving up smoking.

You are not a failure. Never be hard on yourself; all you need to be is committed and confident. Do stand by your decision, and even takes time, you will surely succeed.

To quit smoking might not be very easy, but it is also not too difficult if you have the determination, have the right support, if you love your family and friends, want to lead a happy, healthy, and long life, with and for them.

  1. Hey,

This is such an important and informative post. I myself do not smoke but my Mum, my brother and a number of friends and colleagues all smoke. Some of them are chain smokers and if they don’t stop soon then they are going to get really ill. Eddie Van Halen (my hero) has recently died of tongue cancer and that was from years and years of chain smoking. I don’t want the same thing to happen to my friends and family members.

So, I am going to share this article with them and if they have any questions or want to find out more then I will encourage them to get in touch with you. If that is OK?

Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.

    All the best,

    • Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Yes it is totally fine if they get in touch with me. It’s true with smokers don’t stop they will get you some sooner some later. But either way, it always ends up bad. My wife’s brother died from heart failure because of smoking. It was such a sad thing to see him in the hospital as he took his last breath. Smoking is a killer and it takes lives.

  2. This is excellent advice! My dad smoked for 40 years and actually quit all on his own. It is mainly a mindset thing from what I can tell. It’s like a crutch that people think they have to have, but the nicotine enhances that feeling. My dad switched to an e-cig at first then gradually scaled down the amount of nicotine he used until he didn’t use any at all! Now he simply holds an e-cig in his fingers just out of habit.

For him to stop smoking it is truly a miracle and I know that any one can do it with the right mindset and support. Thanks so much for sharing this post!

    • Hi Shyla,

I think that is fantastic that your dad was able to get off on his own. It takes so much self-control, determination, and a strong desire to want to do it. Thanks for sharing that and reading.
