How To Stop Thinking Negatively

In this article, we will be going over “10 Great Ways On How To Stop Thinking Negatively.” Having a constant negative outlook on life will stop you from achieving your full potential. Negativity is defined by dictionary.com as “lacking in constructiveness, helpfulness, optimism, cooperativeness, or the like.”

With this definition, we learn that negativity is not helpful, is not cooperative, and is certainly not constructive. You are physically destroying your life by your negative thoughts.

In the book, The Happiness Trap, author Russ Harris says, œ80% of everyone’s thoughts contain some sort of negative content.

It is very common to have negative thoughts, but it is unacceptable to not be able to overcome the negative thinking that you are creating.

Negative thinking is like a virus, it can spread quickly and it can be deadly. Combating negativity is very difficult. You may be asking; how do I stop my negative thoughts?

How can I turn my negative thoughts into positive ones? Don’t you worry, you are in luck! Here are the top 10 top ways on how to stop thinking negatively!

10 Great Ways On How To Stop Thinking Negatively:

1). Smile Through Life:

Make an honest and consistent effort to smile more! Smile through tough times! It is true that you can smile your negativity away because the energy surrounded by a smile is addictive and contagious.

We have the amazing ability to change our energy and our reactions to a situation. So, if a frown is keeping you down, then smile.

When you’re out in public try to smile around people it’s funny the reactions you get. I do this all the time when I’m in stores.

Some people just look down, others smile back, and others just look at me like I’m a complete idiot. Either way, it’s a lot of fun to do.

What you send out comes back to you in one form or another through the law of attraction. So if you’re sending out smiles and good vibes and feeling good all of that is going to come back to you. The best part about all of this is as you smile at people you’re programming yourself to be more positive.

2. Stay Away From Negative People:

Consider surrounding yourself with people who think more positively. Don’t let other people dictate the type of thinking you may have.

Find a group of people that think about the best-case scenario and who can visualize a more positive outcome. You will start to find yourself thinking more positively and being a happier person.

Being around negative people is so toxic and depressing. Your environment is so important. It’s actually more important than the way you were raised believe it or not.

If you can get yourself around positive, upbeat, enthusiastic people. You will naturally take on those attitudes and with little effort. Something about us being around people we begin to mimic them.

If making a lot of money is something that’s important to you which I think it should be, you need to be around people that are at the level you want to be, but are also extremely positive and have a can-do attitude.

Being around those types of people really changes you and that’s what life is about constant positive change. You know what it’s like being around toxic, negative, depressing people. You just don’t feel good around them.

How To Stop Thinking Negatively

You would rather be around someone who sees all the good in life and who has a great attitude, and looks at the bright side and everything.

I use to work at Harmons years ago. And this one guy always came in and he was so positive, he greeted everybody in the produce department so warmly. When he came in contact with me I felt so good, and I asked myself what is he on, he seemed so positive and upbeat like life was fantastic.

Come to find out, this man was very wealthy, a multi-millionaire. I got talking to him and that’s how his attitude is always and he said it’s changed his life in more ways than just money.

That has never left me but has always stuck out to me. Most people go through life so wrapped up in their negativity and all the garbage that’s going on around them.

We are literally programmed to be toxic and destroy ourselves from the inside out. Your environment is extremely important, and you need to be around winners, confident people, and people who see the greatness in you and in others.

3). Read About Inspirational People:

Many people who are successful in this world didn’t get life handed to them! Sure, there are some people who were born into wealth, but a lot of people started out in very humble beginnings and hustled their way to the top.

For example, take a look at Steve Job’s life story! Read about successful people to get inspired to be positive. When I find myself in a funk, I will actually go and read about successful people all the time.

The beautiful thing is these people are no different than anybody else, they just have their thoughts in order and have a strong desire to succeed at something. I think that is such a beautiful and powerful thing to understand.

One of the things that you can do as well as get yourself a mentor because they can be an absolute inspiration to you. But you need to make sure that this mentor is where you want to be in all areas of your life.

That way when you take advice from them you know that you’re getting the right advice because they’ve already done it. I have a few mentors in my life.

Bob Proctor, Grant Cardone, Jordan Belfort, Brian Tracy just to name a few. The advice that these people give to me is amazing. It has changed my life, and I know that what they teach me works because they’ve done it.

4). Play Up The Positivity:

When something good and positive happens in your life don’t just shrug it off. Pretend that the positive thing is the greatest event of your life.

If you find a dollar on the ground, truly consider this to be the happiest moment of your life. If you play up the small positives in your life you will begin to realize how much positivity there is around you.

5). Consider People Like You:

Have you ever sent somebody a text and they didn’t respond right away and so naturally you thought, “oh my gosh they hate me!”

Stop automatically assuming that people don’t like you. Don’t leave a conversation assuming they are talking negatively about you the moment you leave. Stop letting your social anxiety run your life.

6). Exercise:

“Endorphins make you happy and happy people don’t just shoot their husbands.” As silly as this line is from the movie Legally Blonde, she has a point.

Exercising is a natural high with no drop like sugar does. Exercising will uplift your mood, create a positive mind set, and will also improve your overall health.

7). Serve Others:

When you serve others, you don’t have time to think about yourself and how many things you lack. Start doing small acts of service towards other people and watch your negative thinking wash away.

Other people have it worse then you and one of the best ways to avoid negative thinking is helping others who may have harder struggles.

8). Forgive Yourself:

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all do things that we aren’t proud of and want to change. Don’t let these mistakes ruin your life.

If you can make amends, do it! But, if it’s something that cannot be changed, move on! There are going to be moments in our life that we are not proud of, but we can’t let them dictate our future.

9). Create A Gratitude Journal:

Do you ever forget how much you have been blessed with? Sometimes we start thinking negatively because we don’t have more and then we forget how much we already have.

Consider creating a gratitude journal where you are writing five things that you are grateful for that day. Every day is a gift, so write about it!

10). Positive Affirmations:

You are awesome! Everybody is amazing. We all have talents, we all have positive qualities and wonderful things about us. It is okay to tell yourself that you are fantastic. It is okay to tell yourself that you did a great job.

Continually through the day tell yourself the good things that you are doing. You are your best critic, but you are also your best supporter.

These ten tips can help turn your negative thoughts into positive ones and therefore, positive actions. The only way to be successful in this life is to have positive actions.

It truly does take a positive attitude to lead to success. You must not only have a positive outlook on yourself and your abilities, but you must also have a positive outlook on life.

Our goal is to be positive in this life. Positivity (in this context) is defined by dictionary.com as encouraging or noting a healthy or balanced outlook toward something. In this definition, we learn that being positive is having a healthy outlook towards something.

It is much more important to have a healthy outlook rather than an outlook of negativity which is lacking in constructiveness, helpfulness, optimism, and cooperation.

  1. Hi, great tips. I too have noticed that when I smile at people I start to feel better. I really love the idea of looking for inspiration from people who’ve achieved what it is you are seeking. I’m definitely gonna take on that recommendation. It’s so true, mentors can make such a big difference. If you don’t know how to do something, being coached through it can give you the roadmap and the tools you need. Thanks for the great tips. I look forward to reading some more posts 🙂

  2. I absolutely love it!
Very well said and very well put together. Overcoming negative thoughts can be something that is extremely hard to overcome but with enough practice it can be done. The mind can be a dangerous thing if you allow it to be. Our minds are like radios…if you don’t like what’s on the station, then change the channel (I got that from Joyce Myer).
I couldn’t help but laugh when you said that sometimes you go around smiling and you get funny looks. I can only imagine. I sometimes do this too but only when I make eye contact with someone but then I feel some type of way when they don’t smile back or look at me crazy. I know I shouldn’t let it bother me but it does but after reading your post I’m going to make more of an effort to not let it bother me and start smiling more for my own benefit.
Great post and I look forward to reading more.
    Keep up the great work!

  3. Thanks for sharing these tips. I can’t put my finger on one in particular because all of them work and should be combined for a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. Positivity is all around us, all we have to do is tune in and don’t let the life to toss us where it wants. I appreaite your work here and I like your site a lot. Keep up the good work!

  4. Hey Alex,

Thanks for putting this post together, you’ve got some great tips.

Why is it that we have negative thoughts 80% of the time? Do you think it’s because we always want more stuff, and we can never really fulfill all of our desires?

I love the idea of keeping a gratitude journal. I’m going to start one today.

    Keep smiling!

    • Hi Michael,

Thanks for stopping by. I think the reason we have negative thoughts is that we are programmed to be negative from an early age.

Everything that was around us was negative most of the time and we just incorporate that into our behavior.

By learning to think for ourselves and learn to reprogram our mind by thinking from the inside out that’s where everything will change.

We can fulfill all our desires as long as our head is right. But most of the time we are too negative because we let the outer world dictate what we are thinking and feeling.

When we can think from the inside out and get that as a self-discipline that’s when our lives will change for the better and in a drastic way.

      Hope this helps 🙂

  5. Hi,

Thank you for the great tips. They are so useful for me to stop thinking negatively, especially the second tip which is to stay away from negative people. People would really affect each other. If you are surrounded by negative people, you’ll become one of them. On the other hand, if you’re surrounded by positive people, you’ll become a positive-thinking person. That’s what my real experience. I was surrounded by many negative people a decade ago, my thinking and attitude tend to be negative at that time. When I changed my working place where have a lot of positive people, I feel very happy now. I rare to have negative thinking now. So, what kind of people you’re staying with, you’ll usually become one of them.

    All the best,
